Art Direction:
One of the lessons learned from this project was finding how to extract the essence of DIY punk zines and recreate them while preserving basic design principles. It would be very easy to create something that felt “overproduced”, betraying the makeshift nature of these zines.
The final design focused on the use of photography as my primary image-making, as punk zines were a form of photojournalism for local shows and band news. The photos were printed in black & white and then scanned to imitate the low-budget production of these xeroxed books. Lastly, colors were limited to a set of highlighter pens that were lying around; although it was an afterthought, it felt very DIY to just make that decision based on what was there at the moment.
